The problem isn't your engine—it's your gear ratio. Regearing a lifted truck is one of the most overlooked but critical upgrades that restores the drivability your bigger tires took away.

Regearing refers to swapping the ring and pinion gears inside your truck's differential for a set with a different ratio. The ring and pinion are the large and small gears that transfer power from the driveshaft to the axle shafts, ultimately spinning your wheels.
The gear ratio—expressed as numbers like 3.21, 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56—tells you how many times the driveshaft rotates for every one rotation of the wheels. A 3.73 ratio means the driveshaft turns 3.73 times for each full wheel revolution.
Higher numerical ratios (like 4.56) are called "lower" or "shorter" gears. They provide more mechanical advantage—more torque at the wheels—at the cost of higher engine RPM at highway speeds. Lower numerical ratios (like 3.21) are "taller" gears that keep RPMs down on the highway but deliver less torque multiplication.
When you install larger tires, you're effectively making your gear ratio taller without changing any gears. Here's the simple version: a larger tire covers more ground per revolution. Your differential still spins the axle the same number of times, but each spin moves the truck farther. The result is identical to installing a taller gear ratio.
A truck that came from the factory with 3.73 gears and 31-inch tires was engineered so the engine, transmission, and differential work together in an optimal RPM range. Swap those 31s for 35-inch tires, and you've essentially changed your effective ratio to roughly 3.30—a significant shift that the powertrain wasn't calibrated for.
The symptoms are predictable:

The formula: New Ratio = (New Tire Diameter / Old Tire Diameter) x Original Ratio
Example: Your truck came with 3.73 gears and 31-inch tires. You installed 35-inch tires.
New Ratio = (35 / 31) x 3.73 = 4.21
The closest commonly available ratio is 4.10, which would get you very close to stock behavior. If you want to fully restore or even slightly improve low-end torque (recommended for trucks that tow or go off-road), stepping up to 4.56 gears is the better choice.
Here's a general guideline based on tire size for trucks that came with 3.73 factory gears:

Regearing isn't a bolt-on job. The setup process—measuring gear contact patterns using marking compound—is where experience matters most.
Improper setup leads to gear whine, premature wear, or catastrophic failure. This is not a job for a general mechanic who "can probably figure it out." It requires specialized tools including a dial indicator, bearing puller and press, inch-pound torque wrench, and the knowledge to interpret contact pattern markings.
The process takes six to ten hours per axle depending on the vehicle. Trucks with front and rear differentials (all 4x4 trucks) need both axles regeared to match. Running mismatched ratios front to rear will destroy your transfer case.
Expect to pay between $1,500 and $3,000 for a complete regear of both axles on most trucks. That includes the ring and pinion gear sets (typically $250 to $400 per axle), master install kits with new bearings and seals ($100 to $200 per axle), and labor.
It's not cheap, but consider the alternative: living with a truck that drives poorly, burns extra fuel every single day, and accelerates transmission wear that will eventually cost you a $3,000 to $5,000 rebuild.
